about

Lowlights is a song written about living in the prison of someone else's shadow and control. Holding onto dark secrets that could never dare be brought to light and feeling like the heart is being held captive. Eve and the apple.

"For me personally it is about looking back on a period of my life in my younger 20s where I felt so trapped and unconscious in my situation," says Joe Nolan. "And then finally finding a way to release myself from those chains.

"We must all find our shine in one way or another… and no matter how hard the road is to get there for some of us… it's all part of our story and I am grateful for that.

"Stand tall for who you are and let the monsters under the bed know you're there and that you're no longer afraid!"

This song was recorded on Nolan's 4 track cassette tape recorder in the Sturgeon County area in Alberta, Canada. It follows his Canadian Folk Music Award nominated album "Drifters" (2020).

lyrics

Curtains don't match the drapes
Yea this guitar it don't match the sound
And I still got these nervous shakes
Every time you come around

My clock breaks at eleven
I don't think I'll make it out to the show
I've been doing time on 97
Yea I'll let you know how it goes

Everybody's got it in for somebody
See but I don't wanna be that someone
Whats all this talk round town baby
Can you tell me what good it's done

Now that we're strangers in the same room tonight
In the lowlights
In the lowlights

Well by now I thought I'd be living out east
Rollin with some 6 shooter Queen Street choir
Yea but the Bourgeoisie still sing in harmony
You and I'll be caught on separate sides of that wire

I think cop cars look like sharks
Every time I drive down this road
How long you willing to live in the darkness baby
Before you get too old

Everybody's got it in for somebody
No but I don't wanna be that someone
So whats all this talk round town baby
Can you tell me what good it's done

Now we're strangers in the same room tonight
In the lowlights
In these lowlights
I've been hiding out too long
In these lowlights

Curtains don't match the drapes
Yea this guitar it don't match the sound
And I still got these nervous shakes
Every time you come around
Every time you come around
Every time

about

Joe Nolan Edmonton, Alberta

Cry Baby's 10-song collection is a trip through melancholic madness, touching on darkness & depression, broken relationships & endless booze-fuelled evenings. Yet at its core is Nolan’s unwavering strength as a lyricist, & his wounded-heart delivery that reminds us of our humanity. It's, in essence, Nolan unapologetically sharing his story, & through that finding a second chance & a new beginning. ... more
